Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Advocacy Alliance Names Karen L. Webster as Chairperson of the Board of Directors

Webster’s Philanthropic Passion and Experience Natural Fit for Leader of Advocacy Efforts

WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 3, 2010 – The Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Advocacy Alliance today named Karen L. Webster as chairperson of its board of directors. In this position, Webster will provide key leadership and strategic vision for the public policy sister organization of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the world’s largest breast cancer organization.

“As our advocacy efforts continue to grow, Karen’s savvy business leadership combined with her passion for breast cancer advocacy make her a tremendous asset to the board and our organization,” said Jennifer Luray, president of the Komen Advocacy Alliance.

Webster is president of Market Platform Dynamics, a management consulting firm based in Boston that helps companies find, develop and monetize innovation. She serves as an adviser and board member to many companies operating in the mobile, high technology and payments sectors. As a recognized industry thought leader, she is often asked to speak and write about profiting from innovation. Webster also is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where she serves as a member of its Executive Council for the Women’s Cancer Program and the Board’s Committee on Quality.

“Over the course of the year and during my time on the board of the Advocacy Alliance, I have come to see Komen for the Cure in action and behind the scenes,” Webster said. “It is an impressive organization of people who work day and night to be successful stewards of the mission to eradicate breast cancer.”

Webster also is the co-founder of twoAM (Two Women on A Mission), a fundraising initiative focused on raising awareness and funds for breast and ovarian cancer research. She recently launched Living Conversations, a web-based community of breast cancer survivors, which was profiled on The Today Show. She is a graduate of The Johns Hopkins University with a Masters Degree in Marketing.

“The Komen Advocacy Alliance has experienced great success to date, advocating for cancer patients to be included in the health reform bill, and fighting for screening and funding for women in states all across the country,” said Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, founder and CEO Susan G. Komen for the Cure. “Karen’s energy and expertise will help us build on this success.”

Webster succeeds Brinker, who chaired the Advocacy board prior to becoming CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure in 2009.
