For the past several months the Komen Advocacy Alliance has called on Congress and the Obama Administration to “consider cancer” when developing health reform plans.
Responding to this call, a new report was published on HealthReform.gov that highlights the many challenges cancer patients and survivors face in the current health care system and details the potential impact of several proposed patient protections, such as ensuring access to affordable high-quality insurance regardless of any preexisting condition and protecting patients from financial ruin due to high out-of-pocket health costs.
The report also discusses a proposal to prevent insurance companies from dropping coverage when patients get sick. To illustrate the need for this reform, the report shares the story of a breast cancer survivor whose insurance provider refused to cover her treatment due to a minor discrepancy in her medical history.
